Everybody Loves a Parade

I have to be honest. I really don't get it. Our little town parade on Memorial Day consisted of every fire truck from the station, 20 or so Boy Scouts and one antique car. Nevertheless, people lined the sidewalk and sat on the curb to watch it "all" pass before their eyes! Gotta Love it!

Parade Ready

Seems like every small town in America has a Memorial Day Parade that also marks the unofficial start of the Summer Season. I am inclined to think that this piece of fire fighting equipment has been in more than a few of these annual events.

Barred Owl

...another of the models from the Theodore Roosevelt Bird Santuary. A vanishing breed as farms become housing developments.

Fort Pond Bay solitude in a lifting fog. Pretty as a picture...

American Kestril

At the Theodore Roosevelt Bird Santuary in Oyster Bay an American Kestril strikes an "over the shoulder" pose for my lens.

Give a Hoot

Great Horned Owl...as an excellent model! The Theodore Roosevelt Bird Santuary in Oyster Bay, Long Island sponsored a photo shoot featuring birds of prey. It was a rare opportunity to photograph these beautiful birds in a natural setting.

Work Boat

So much of Montauk has been "gentrified" that seeing bits of the original and salty way of life can be refreshing. No yacht this, yet somehow it is a pricless icon of the hard working East Enders.

The Point

And then the fog lifted...While our stay in Montauk was a foggy one (no pun intended) there were breaks in the visibility that had us both reaching for cameras.

End Of The Line

Montauk Station...LIRR's Eastern most stop. A touch of fog seemed to add just the right atmosphere for this shot of a desolate stop at the end of the line.

Point of Contention

Opposing Interests...Plenty of tension at Montauk Point as surfers and surf casters world's collide. This fisherman was being careful and showed patient restraint as surfers (looking for the perfect wave) were crossing into the "No Surfing" zone reserved for fisherman. As the season gets into full swing this scene will be repeated numerous times, there is an active Police presence although it is difficult to patrol the large expanse of beach around the Point. The End

Montauk Light (and Fog Horn)...The horn was getting a lot more use than the light on this day! Not a good day for vessels without radar!

Lifting Fog

Spent a few days in a fog. Montauk was pretty much "socked-in" the past couple of days. Fort Pond Bay during a rare glimpse of the sun...

Fish Trap

Montauk...One of the last of a vanishing breed, fish traps in Fort Pond Bay.

May Evenings

There's always a fresh sense of renewal that comes with the sweet aromas of an early May evening. For me, it's an appreciation not to be missed.

Searching for Weakfish

At long last...A window of weather opportunity that matched the "right" tide! A beautiful early morning on the water. Score one Sea Robin and a keeper Fluke (19.5 inches! )

Tulip Time

Suffering from creative photo drought lately, searching for that in the moment inspiration!

Nor'Easter Aftermath

National Seashore...This is no day at the beach! The Fire Island National Seashore is littered with debris from the destruction done during this month's Nor'Easter.

Lunch Break

Geese...They are everywhere and multiplying. One begins to wonder just how any life form can poop more than it eats?

Waiting for Vance

Seen in a Window...Walking in mid-town Manhattan the other day when I passed this window scene and thought of brother-in-Law Vance. Quite the Bass Guitar player, Vance could most likely spend the entire weekend in this shop!

Location, Location, Location

Big difference between a house ON the ocean and a house IN the ocean. The recent Nor'Easter caused devastating erosion along Fire Island's coastline. In Davis Park the primary ocean front dune has washed away. The sand that anchored the support pilings for many homes has gone the way of the tide.

Almost Spring

This past Wednesday Central Park was on the verge of "busting out" in all it's Spring glory. I'm sure that this scene will look much more colorful after this glorious sunny weekend.

Sunshine

And the sun came out....After April days of cold rain and winter coats, Spring arrived yesterday with the promise of staying around for awhile!

Nor'Easter and High Tide.... Very close call at high tide as this view across the canal shows. Seems as though Long Island really lucked out this time as the brunt of the storm hit West and North of the area. Now...a little sunshine and some warmer temps would be most welcome! Posted by Picasa

April...The day before the rains came! Certainly seems as if Spring is slow getting underway. Heck, the baseball players are wearing ski masks and the trout pond has skim ice! If this 40 degree rain ever stops .....maybe just maybe, the real deal Spring will make an appearance!

Rain and cold... the bane of comfortable fishermen. Only trout dreams lately..... Posted by Picasa

Morning Promise...Ahh..the joy of those first cool and crisp April trout mornings. While hope may spring eternal, the fish aren't always interested. Only catches this day were made with a camera lens. Posted by Picasa

Overhead!...Celebrating the return of the Osprey. (The detail in the tail feathers is best in the large view) After years of abscence on Long Island, these proud birds of prey are becoming a common and welcome sight.

Mating Ospreys...A pair of Osprey have elected to nest in the chimney top of the Cutting Mansion located at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum. The arboretum is located along the Connetquot River, not a bad location for an Osprey! These two birds were not overly shy and spent time sitting in trees just above our heads prior to their little mating dance in the nest. Posted by Picasa

Flyby....Tried my luck at fishing for trout this morning and just HAD to bring the camera. The result, of course, was that I did not do either activity very well! This guy and several of his buddies flew rather close to me as I tried to pan with the camera and hold on to my fly rod at the same time...yikes! Lol

Spring Shadows... The hope is that our Spring will bring warmth and chase this last breath of winter.... :-)

Soon... The Sicilian Spring was well underway during early March. In spite of the current chill, our turn is right around the corner! :-)
