The Navy Hospital, built in 1838, is a national historic landmark. The building is constructed entirely of block marble and is in a state of total neglect and decay. The entire site is a reminder of just how quickly nature can reclaim abandoned buildings. Tentative plans call for a "media campus" that would involve several historical buildings at the Brooklyn Navy Yard with the old hospital as the campus' center.

Old Navy Yard

Old Navy Yard, originally uploaded by Chris S Thorpe.
A little artistic license in this image of a "rusting" industry. Things are happening behind this fence however as new ventures are underway at the old Navy Yard. Stiener Studios has built acres of "state of the art" TV and motion picture facilities. The facility is complete with a boardwalk (HBO's Boardwalk Empire is filmed here), unfortunately personal photography is strictly forbidden anywhere near the studios.

The storied Brooklyn Navy Yard, now owned by New York City, offers weekend tours. The Navy Yard has several historical buildings as well as new industry. And...the Navy Yard as "tourist site"...who knew?

Polo Action

Mid-September and the action is picking up in the local farm fields. Soon the suburban hordes will descend in search of the perfect pumpkin. Life is Good.

Memorial Pool Corner

Can it really be eleven years? Yesterday's reading of names, without the politicians, seemed very appropriate.

In Remembrance

On the grounds of the 9/11 Memorial......In the shadow of the museum, within earshot of the waterfalls and apart from the respectful crowds, it's still the simple things that can speak the loudest.

New Jersey's "Empty Sky" memorial is located directly across the Hudson River from the World Trade site in Manhattan. The memorial lists names of New Jersey residents who were lost on 9/11 and is a powerful reminder of our tragic loss.

Freedom Tower View

Real Estate as metaphor....the Freedom Tower is truly impressive as it continues to  rise above.

Dockside Sunset

While I understand that there are really three more weeks of summer, there is real change in the air after Labor Day. The boaters are fewer, the kids are back in school and the cooler evenings have me reaching for a sweatshirt....

Polo

Polo Pair, originally uploaded by Chris S Thorpe.
Often the action is on the far side of the field (or so it seems), these two passed rather close to the camera! The woman in white appeared to outplay most of the other players. Horseplay at Bethpage State Park....

Sunday Polo action.... It isn't all about golf at Bethpage State Park.
