Harbor Traffic

Knowing the nautical "Rules of the Road" really matters in New York Harbor!

Heat Wave

Three weeks into July of 2010 and they tell us the month has already set the record for heat. The weekend promises more uncomfortable temperatures with highs approaching the 100 degree mark. The good news is that I'm not standing in a long line at Disney World!! :-)

Happiness is....

....a good lens and a good view. Some women would prefer having their nails done or perhaps a day of shopping but my wife smiles most with a camera in her hands!

Tidal Mill

The Lefferts-Van Wyck tidal mill and dam in lloyd Harbor shows excessive dam erosion. Stewards of the last remaining Long Island tidal mill say that the entire complex is unsafe and "a major storm" away from destruction. The surrounding pond and waterfront homes would also face environmental changes.

Historic View

This view of Lloyd Harbor is from the last standing "Tidal Mill" in New York. The Lefferts-Van Wyck mill circa 1790 used tidal currents and an earthen dam to power it's impressive wooden gears. Serious erosion of the dam has forced the mill to be closed to the public, the entire site is in jeopardy due to a lack of funding for any type of preservation. The mill ceased operating in the late 1880's.

Lunch

Not your basic three martini lunch, but a cold Snapple is just as welcome. I loved the way these WTC workers were watching the world go by as they obeyed the sign above and to the right of their group. (the NO STANDING sign is more visible in the large view, click on the image)

Off To The Races

A cultural formality remains in horse racing providing a sense of ritual and elegance. Sounds of the bugler's "Call to Post" echo throughout the park signaling riders to the starting gate. Here, an entry is being lead from the paddock to the track. Rituals at the betting windows, however, seem far removed from formal or elegant!

Take A Walk

Take a walk, watch the sun set or the moon rise. Few "free activities" in New York can top a stroll from Manhattan to Brooklyn on this architectural treasure. Life is good...

Final Turn

...And headed down the homestretch. Photo fun at Belmont Racetrack in spite of the oppressive heat! (best in large view)

Great South Bay Fireworks

Fireworks on the bay provide a spectacular end to the Fourth of July festivities. The boat traffic afterwards provided it's own form of entertainment!

Demonstrative Mermaid

At the Coney Island Mermaid celebration I had a serious flashback experience. Just can't help thinking that we went to the prom together... or perhaps it was the Debutante Ball?

A View From The Bridge

(Best in the larger view) The setting sun behind the manhattan skyline only enhances an early evening walk over the Brooklyn Bridge. I remember hearing early in my childhood that the best things in life are free, add this to the list!!
