Morning Departure

Morning Departure, originally uploaded by Chris S Thorpe.
Still and quiet are not adjectives to describe New York but our dawn departure provided a very peaceful approach to Manhattan. A very different perspective indeed...

Passing To Port

Passing To Port, originally uploaded by Chris S Thorpe.
All that talk about nautical "Rules of the Road" need to be applied in New York Harbor. The size of our sailboat shrunk considerably as ferries, tankers, tugs and barges shared the waterway. A fast moving Staten Island Ferry can put things in perspective in a hurry.

Inlet Sunrise

Inlet Sunrise, originally uploaded by Chris S Thorpe.
An early departure from Fire Island Inlet gave us a glimpse of the sunrise. In the distance is the Robert Moses Tower and Fire Island light while the sea buoy welcomed our arrival in the ocean. Life is good!

Eyes On New York

Eyes On New York, originally uploaded by Chris S Thorpe.

Lady Liberty

Lady Liberty, originally uploaded by Chris S Thorpe.
A sail into New York Harbor would not be complete without paying one's respect to Lady Liberty in spite of heavy boat traffic.
Soon after this shot we were surronded by tour boats. The jet ski on the scene was a bit like a bicycle on the expressway and created a bit of chaos.

NYC Arrival

NYC Arrival, originally uploaded by Chris S Thorpe.
This photo blogger has been off the grid for awhile as we are sailing into Manhattan from points east. After hours on the ocean this view was a welcome sight...Life is Good!

Two Mile Harbor

Two Mile Harbor, originally uploaded by Chris S Thorpe.
Bows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I've looked at clouds that way.... Joni Mitchell

Okay, this is what so many Long Islanders wait for... weekend mid-July, the water temperature is up, the sun is shinning and the beach awaits. Life is Good.

Honky Tonk

Honky Tonk, originally uploaded by Chris S Thorpe.
Summertime and boardwalks...somethings just never go out of fashion. It has always amazed me that people, while on vacation, will spend money on things that they would rarely buy any other time. It's not unlike trying to win that over stuffed teddy bear at the county fair. It's all in that category of "it seemed  like a good idea at the time". Ahh..summer!

Warf Light

Warf Light, originally uploaded by Chris S Thorpe.
Finally...a break in the weather! The weekend heat was rather intense and that refreshing off-shore sea breeze has been absent. Much more reasonable temperatures seem to have arrived.

It's HOT

Rough Surf, originally uploaded by Chris S Thorpe.
The talking heads on my TV point to maps highlighted in red and temperature readings in three digits. The camera pans out to show these readings in red to cover most of the continent. Baby, it's hot outside...get thee to a beach, a pool or just hunker down in the A/C. And...here's an interesting factoid: there are more annual fatalities from heat than any other weather related event. A curious statistic considering all those tornados, hurricanes and blizzards. Stay cool...

Point O' Woods

Point O Woods, originally uploaded by Chris S Thorpe.
Private ferry, Private community....Point O' Woods was founded as a religious enclave in the late 19th century and is one of the oldest communities on Fire Island. Extremely private, Point O' Woods is family oriented with strict rules for renters and potential buyers. The screening process for possible residency requires buyers to rent for at least one season before approval. With no restaurants or bars the town is very quiet by design. No weekend rift-raft here.....

Dune Fence

Dune Fence, originally uploaded by Chris S Thorpe.
Reclaiming the beach...The littoral drift, the shifting sands and man's endless attempts to control it all are evident here on Fire Island. This past winter was fairly free of beach destroying northeasters, those storms that linger and eat away at the beach. The use of snow fence to hold sand and rebuild dunes does work but only with a little help from mother nature!

LOGO

LOGO, originally uploaded by Chris S Thorpe.
The MLB season is rapidly approaching the half way mark. There's plenty of media frenzy already building for next week's All Star Game. For fans, there have been plenty of surprises ( good and bad ) during the first half of the season.
This image of the Mets logo shot through a glass window is seen best in the larger view (click on the image).

Sayville Ferry

Sayville Ferry, originally uploaded by Chris S Thorpe.
There can be no question that the Fire Island summer schedule is in full swing. The Sayville ferry terminal is operating at full capacity, boaters navigating Brown's River need to contend with the constant issue of Fire Island bound ferries. On busy weekends the traffic can be somewhat daunting.

Sunset Sail

Sunset Sail, originally uploaded by Chris S Thorpe.
Sunset on the Great South Bay...With record breaking heat on Long Island this weekend, this is one of the cooler places to be (outside of the A/C).
